At over 150 years old, Wigton and Millom footbridges have been suffering from corrosion and coating failure for multiple years. Working with Taziker Industrial, we have provided extensive restoration works, including the removal of the existing paint, a new protective paint system and new underfoot safety products.

Removing the existing coating & surface preparation
Before the restoration works could begin, the existing paint was removed using abrasive shot blasting (commonly referred to as sand blasting) to expose any potential repairs and heavily corroded areas.
Surface preparation is arguably the most important part of a protective coating system, having a clean, contaminant free substrate is vital to the system’s life expectancy.
Following inspection and repair by Taziker Industrial, they returned both structures to our St Helens facility for painting and GRP installation.
Sealing of lattice parapets
It’s important to cover all aspects of potential corrosion and coating failure when applying a protective coating system. With lattice parapet design, it is highly likely to suffer from “rust bleeding” which is when rust drips down from small gaps between connected surfaces. Not only is this unsightly, but it can also result in coating breakdown if left untreated.
To combat this, we applied a mastic sealant to all connected joints on the lattice parapets, further improving the coating system’s performance.
Protective Paint System - Restoration complete
Following our initial blast clean and repairs by Taziker Industrial, our Product Finishing team applied a Network Rail approved, 3 coat paint system utilising glass flake epoxy – protecting both structures for 15 years. Underfoot safety
Millom
The existing timber decking had to be removed because of its condition and replaced with a suitable alternative. We opted to use our GRiP Plank 500 decking system, combined with Permagrip PU anti-slip surfacing, DDA Stairmaster nosings and GRP riser plates to replace the main span decking, treads and landings.
Corduroy tactile flooring panels have been fitted to the main span for additional DDA compliance and our Permadeck Systems site team carried out the same works on the staircases left in situ at Millom Station, fitting out both staircases with the same decking system.
GRiP Plank 500 creates a lightweight, durable and load-bearing alternative to steel with little to no maintenance.

Wigton
The existing timber decking on the Wigton footbridge was removed and replaced with steel plates. Our PDS team then applied Permagrip PU anti-slip surfacing , installed DDA Stairmaster Nosings & fitted corduroy tactile flooring to the span deck and stairs.
Following successful site installation by Taziker Industrial, our site team visited Wigton Station to carry out the same works to the staircases on site.
